VFW slates Yule Party for Dec. 14
Marshalltown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 839 has selected Dec. 14 as date for its 2019 traditional Christmas Party.
Rick Johnson headed discussion during Tuesday’s November meeting as a ham and turkey meal and happy hour agenda was set by Harry C. Harter Post members. Phil Gould will provide music. The brief December meeting will be held at beginning of the 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. happy hour which will precede the meal served by volunteers.
Rob Shepherd, senior vice commander, presided at the meeting. Post charter was draped in memory of Robert Moore. Quartermaster Roger Dirks reported a new post member prospect, Jack Clifford Walker, an Army Korean Conflict veteran, and he was voted affirmative to membership.
Ken Breinig, reporting joint VFW/American Legion Honor Guard activities, noted military honors presented at 10 veterans’ funerals during October. He reported Honor Guard participation on Oct. 14 at the Iowa Veterans Home for the Submarine Memorial Highway ceremony.
The 17 VFW members in attendance voted to donate $100 toward Salvation Army holiday projects. Post veterans also discussed participation at a Nov. 25 tip night project at Culvers restaurant in 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. shifts, with proceeds earmarked toward the Iowa Veterans Home.
Meeting roles included Dirks, quartermaster receipts and disbursements; Larry Tuttle, adjutants roll call and minutes; Don Douglas, guard duties and Mel Pitzen, chaplains prayers.
