Marshalltown VFW eyes building faults

Upkeep of building facilities at Veterans of Foreign Wars quarters at 107 E. Meadow Lane was among topics during the Feb. 18 meeting.

Fundraising for fixing mold and water leakage faults, suggested by Rick Johnson, were public fish fries on March 27, April 10 and April 24, also potential tip nights at Culver’s and Taco Johns.

Harry C. Harder Post 839 Commander Jerry Black presided over the meeting. The post charter was draped in memory of Buck Hepler and Robert Slinker. Quarter Master Roger Dirks reported Army veteran Derek Deighton, of Haverhill, Iraq War era, as a prospective post member and he was accepted into membership.

Ken Breinig reported the joint VFW/American Legion Honor Guard participated at 10 veterans’ military funerals during January. He also noted cleaning and inventory on rifles, plus financial status.

Post Service Officer Dennis Meyers and Steve Hyde, member of the Iowa Commission for Veterans Affairs, discussed problems and solutions for attaining veterans benefits.

Hyde served as acting adjutant during the meeting. Other rituals were taken by Johnson, guard and service officer and Mel Pitzen, acting chaplain.
