Marshalltown American Legion Auxiliary Unit 46 holds meeting

The ALA May 11, 2021 meeting was opened by Deb Miller, President at 6:10 P.M at the American Legion Post 46 in the lower level. Opening Prayer was given by Dorothy Hellberg, Chaplain. Following the prayer Dorothy Hellberg led the group in a Memorial to the 10 Unit members who passed away in the last year.

The Pledge of Allegiance and the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary was led by Deb Miller, President.

New member Laurel was welcomed by the membership. Laurel is a retired veteran who served 22 years in the Air Force.

We had no sick calls. It was reported that ALA member, Donna Harris passed away.

Printed minutes of the April meeting were distributed and a motion to accept minutes was made by Dorothy Hellberg and seconded by Linda Fuller, motion passed.

Treasure Report was given by Amy McCready, Treasurer. Motion to accept Treasurer’s Report was made by Meg Sponseller and seconded by Dee Norton, motion passed.

Membership report by given by Meg Sponseller, we have 1 new member. The New Member Brunch has been postponed until a later time.

Junior’s Report was given by Pat McLain. The meeting for April was canceled due to lack of attendees. The Juniors are still collecting cans and bottles to raise money for Junior Camp this summer. They are also collecting pop tabs to be turned into the Junior District President in Gladbrook for the Ronald McDonald House.

A sympathy card was sent out to the Donna Harris’ family.

No other committee Reports were given.

Old Business

Coupons are still being collected to be sent overseas for military families to use.

Stamps for the Wounded Program is continuing.

We will continue collecting items for Camp Courageous through the month of May.

Jeffery, Veteran in Need Project was completed which included installation of 9 blinds and valances.

Nominating Committee reported the following nominations for offices as follows; President — Deb Miller; 1st Vice President — LaTonya Warnell; 2nd Vice President — Barb Blake; Secretary — Patricia McLain; Treasurer — Amy McCready; Chaplain — Dorothy Hellberg; Historian — Arlene Kremer; Sgt of Arms — Linda Fuller, Kellie Allen, and Marcella Stewart. Nominations from the floor will be accepted at the June meeting before the election.

Holiday Stroll on November 20, 2021 participation was tabled for now.

Member Nicole Johnson was elected as 3rd District Historian at the ALA 3rd District Meeting.

Memorial Day Events include the Quilts of Valor presentation at 3:00pm on May 31, 2021. Nine veterans, many from the American Legion Post 46 will be awarded a quilt. This will be at the Freedom Rock and followed by cookies and drink in the lower level by the Auxiliary. The All Vets Memorial Day Program will be held at the Freedom Rock at the Post on May 31, 2021 starting at 10:30 am.

A google calendar is being developed and mastered by Kellie Allen. This will be greatly beneficial to the members of the Auxiliary to be aware of and keep track of events.

New Business

May is “Military Appreciation Month”. Green light bulbs are available at the Post.

Poppies will be available for freewill offering at two locations this year on Friday, May 21, 2021 from 9 am to 7 pm. Locations will be HyVee and WalMart.

The ALA is working on a Kitchen Update project in the lower level of the Post. The cost is estimated to be $500. Al Hoop has donated $250 for this project. A further estimate of cost will be provided at the June meeting and decisions made then.

Flower bed, bench and flagpole which is the responsibility of the ALA was discussed. The flagpole has been replaced by the American Legion. A motion made by Dorothy Hellberg and seconded by LaTonya Warnell to allow up to $50 for the purchase of flowers for the flower bed. Motion passed. The bench issue will be decided in June when we have gotten estimates.

A printer was donated to ALA by Dorothy Hellberg. Thank you, Dorothy,!

Child Abuse Prevention Services has given us a Wish List of supplies they would like to be able to give to their organization for babies and small children. The list is available for anyone who wants by calling the President, Debra Miller.

Several Fund Raisers were discussed. ISU Football Fund Raiser, A Culvers Tip Night with date of June 7, 2021 from 5pm to 8pm is to be verified. A possible Reusuable Red Bag and Round Up Program are being checked into be Kellie Allen.

Closing Prayer was given by Dorothy Hellberg, Chaplain.
