American Legion Auxiliary discusses many issues

A recent American Legion Auxiliary Unit 46 meeting was held. The treasurer’s report was given by Amy McCready. A budget committee was appointed by President Deb Miller to form the new budget for the following year. Members of the committee are Barb Blake, Meg Sponseller, Dorothy Hellberg and McCready. They will present the proposed 2021-2022 budget at the next ALA general membership on Aug. 10.

The membership report was given by Sponseller. It was reported only cash or check will be accepted in payment for membership. Members were encouraged to pay dues directly to the unit, rather than online due to the delay in processing. It was reported the State Center ALA has been disbanded. Invitations to join the Marshalltown unit for the August meeting and dessert dinner will be sent to those members by McCready.

The Junior Auxiliary was reported by Pat McLain to begin meetings in September. Pop tabs and pop cans and bottles are still being collected by the Juniors as a fundraiser to have money for camp. Coupons are still being collected and sent to deployed military members. Stamps for The Wounded are being collected for hospitalized military personnel.

The St. Patrick’s Card Party will be held March 21 2022 in the lower level of the Post 46. Barb Blake is the chair of this committee and will provide updates.

The Holiday Stroll is to be Nov. 20. The Auxiliary will provide concessions at the Craft Show that day from noon to 5 p.m. The menu will be fall related with hot dogs, chili dogs, chili, bars and cookies. Additional items may be added as plans are finalized. Ten percent of the sales will be donated to the Central Business District.

The ISU Football Fundraiser is chaired by Kellie Allen. Commitments to help are needed by the end of July. There may be a training meeting on Aug. 28. Culvers Tip Night fundraising will not be held until after school starts.

The Fall Craft Show will be held on Oct. 9 at the National Guard Armory. A second craft show may be held Dec. 11, depending on availability of venue. Marcella Stewart is chair for this fundraiser.

Trunk or Treat will be Oct. 31 in the Post lower level parking lot. Tonya Warnell is chairing the committee to set this up and collect donations. McCready will contact Casey’s for donations.

Laurel Degelau is chair of a committee to design and price t-shirts for the Auxiliary members to purchase. The kitchen makeover and bench by the flagpole projects have been tabled until September. The unit has received $300 total for the kitchen in donations. Cookies for hospice are being furnished with frozen cookie dough by Linda Fuller in July and Tonya Warnell in August.

Aug. 10 is the General Membership meeting. There will be salad and dessert dinner at 6 p.m. preceding the monthly meeting. Barb Blake will be the chair for the meal. The Girls State attendees will present reports of their week at Girls State. New members and State Center ALA members are being invited to attend.

On Aug. 14, the District School of Instruction will be held at the Post. Members will provide donuts and coffee in the morning and a lunch at noon. The menu will consist of sub sandwiches, chips, dessert and drink. Warnell is chairing this committee.

Aug. 21 is the Marshall County School of Instruction in Conrad. Marshalltown Auxiliary Officers should plan to attend.

A patriotic bench idea was presented to the membership by Warnell. A motion was made by Meg Sponseller, seconded by Allen to purchase the bench. The motion carried.

A clock is needed on the lower level of the Post as the old one was broken. A motion made by Sponseller and seconded by Warnell to purchase a Military Clock. McCready was appointed to purchase one up to $75.

The Installation of Officers was conducted by Barb Blake.
