American Legion Auxiliary hosts meeting

The members of the Auxiliary and their guests began the evening with a salad and dessert supper in the lower level of the American Legion Post 46 on August 10, 2021, at 6 pm. New members and the Girls State attendees with their family were special guests.

Before the meeting the three girls chosen to attend the Annual Girls State gave a summary of their 4 days of meetings via zoom. The girls were Rebecka Stone, daughter of Marnie Stone; Veronica Herrera, daughter of Carlos and Helda Herrera; Phoebe Hermanson, daughter of John and Patty Hermanson. All stated it was a very worthwhile learning time and they learned a lot about our government. They learned how to run for offices and to give speeches about what they stood for. It was a delight to have them come and tell us about it. Thank you, girls, for attending and their presentation to our group!

At 7 PM in the absence of President, Deb Miller, Vice President Barb Blake called the meeting to order. Dorothy Hellberg, Chaplain gave the opening prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Sick Call and Bereavement were noted for Chris Carlon, Tonya Warnell and family, Toshia Nusbaumand Teagan, Tatelynn and Trista Bratland. Cards were mailed to them by Rose Elsbecker. A thank you card w as also mailed to Al Hoop for his donation to the kitchen fund.

Minutes were presented by Pat McLain, Secretary. Motion to approve minutes was made by Kellie Allen and seconded by Amy McCready, motion passed.

Amy McCready, Treasurer gave the Treasurer’s report. Motion was made to accept Treasurer’s report and seconded, motion passed.

Membership Report was given by Meg Sponseller. Renewal and New Membership dues will begin to be received in September. No credit or debit cards can be accepted, only cash or checks.

The Juniors report was given by Pat McLain. They continue to collect pop tabs, pop cans and bottles. The pop cans and bottles are a fund raiser for the Jrs to raise money for camp. Pop tabs are a Jr district project for the Ronald McDonald House.

No Committee reports were given.

Old Business:

ISU Football Security Project is chaired by Kellie Allen. We need commitments to this project as soon as possible. There may be a training session on August 28.

Coupons are still being collected and sent overseas to service personnel to use. 4 pounds were sent out last week.

Stamps for Wounded are being collected and given to Lions Club.Child Abuse Prevention Services Project of collecting items needed will end at our next meeting.

• Picnic Tables and Bench

• Printer

• File Cabinet and fire extinguisher

• Oktemberfest Parade

• Trivia Night October 15, 2021

• December Potluck Christmas Party and meeting

New Business:

A Ve teran in Need of Assistance was brought to our attention. We agreed to donate $150 this project. The check will be given to Bob Miller, American Legion Service Officer who is assisting this veteran.

It was brought to our attention that there is a need for TV trays at the Iowa Veteran’s Home. It was agreed to buy 10 of the trays which will be approximately $300 dollars. Karen Kessler made the motion and Julie Hodges seconded; motion carried. The funds for this project will come from the Veteran’s Assistance Fund.

Meeting was adjourned by Barb Blake, following the closing Prayer given by Dorothy Hellberg.

Our next General Membership meeting will be September 14, 2021, in the Lower Level of the American Legion Post 46 at 6pm.
