Marshalltown VFW to host meal

Marshalltown. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 839 reviewed and acted on the program of activities during Tuesday’s August meeting, including plans for hosting another public fundraiser tenderloin meal on Friday, Aug. 27.

Senior Vice Commander Pete Dumer presided over the session in the absence of Commander Rob Shepherd.

Richard (Rick) Johnson, a former commander of this Harry C. Harter Post who last month was awarded a Merit Badge in recognition of his continuous dedication and leadership in the post, led planning for coming events.

Johnson told of recent purchase of a new stove for the post’s kitchen and a new microwave, the latter donated by the post auxiliary women. He also reminded about needed help for the traditional Poppy Days fundraiser manned by post veterans outside local store fronts on Sept. 9-11 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Bob Miller updated activities of the joint VFW/American Legion Honor Guard, noting participation at 11 military funerals for veterans during July.

Quartermaster Roger Dirks reported the post charter was draped during the meeting in memory of Arlyn Mitchell, Willis Skipton and Robert Weiser, also last month for Max Levis and Lyle Fox.

Other rituals were handled by Larry Tuttle, adjutant; Rick Johnson, guard; and Gary Scott, chaplain.
