Marshalltown VFW Post 839 holds busy session

Marshalltown Veterans of Foreign Wars in a multitopic October meeting on Oct. 26 processed a series of coming events.

Among decisions by the 16 Harry C. Harter Post 839 veterans in attendance were: Dec. 10 set as date for the traditional Post Christmas Party with a choice of two meats; a chili meal suggested by Delmar Roberts for members prior to the Nov. 16 regular meeting and updating the outdoor sign by next spring.

Special speakers before Post Commander Rob Shepherd opened the meeting were Kevin Huseboe and Deb Miller. Huseboe, who was appointed director of the Marshall County Veterans Affairs by County Supervisors on Aug. 3, reported that the VA quarters are now located in the Annex at 101 E. Main St. and noted his unit’s successful participation in the collection of nonperishable food and personal hygiene products for the Veterans Appreciation boxes to be distributed on Oct. 23. Huseboe also presented during the meeting a “Certificate of Appreciation” on behalf of the Iowa Association of County Commissioners and Veterans Affairs to Melvin Pitzen for 10 years of “Loyal and Faithful Service.” Pitzen is Chairman of the Marshall County VA Commissioners.

Miller, secretary and media relations chair with the Post 839 VFW Auxiliary, presented a summary of her unit’s ongoing programs, which included the upcoming Quilt of Valor presentation being held on Oct. 23 at the Marshall County Freedom Rock.

Anthony Polkiewicz was recognized as a recent attendee of the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Bob Miller, commander of Marshalltown VFW/American Legion Combined Honor Guard reported on its activities, including finances and participation at four veteran’s military funerals in September. Quartermaster Roger Dirks reported a new transfer to Post 839 membership Laurel Degelau of rural Marshalltown. Degelau, a life VFW At-Large Member, is an Air Force Veteran with more than 22 years’ service and has experience as an executive administrator to the Iowa Veterans Home Commandant.

Other VFW program rituals included: Rick Johnson, Guard; Larry Tuttle, Adjutant; Gary Scott, Chaplain; and Steve Hyde, Judge Advocate.

Commander Shepherd closed the meeting according to ritual.
