American Legion Auxiliary October business meeting

The meeting of the Unit 46 American Legion Auxiliary was called to order by President Debra Miller at 6 p.m. on Oct. 12. Opening prayer was given by Chaplin Dorothy Hellberg. The Pledge of Allegiance and the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary was recited by the members. Eighteen members were in attendance plus one via goggle meet.

Birthdays were recognized, and sick call was noted. Guest, Joel Phillips, Marshall County Sheriff highlighted his work history and thanked the group for all they do.

Minutes of the September 2021 meeting were read by Secretary Pat McLain. A motion from Meg Sponseller and seconded by Liz Polkiewicz to approve the minutes was made. Motion carried. Amy McCready, treasurer, gave the treasurer’s report. A motion was made by Sponseller and seconded by Polkiewicz to accept as given. Motion carried.

Membership Chair Sponseller gave the membership report. The Unit’s goal is 166 members for 2022. It presently has 41 percent paid members for 2022. McLain, junior chair, reported no junior meetings have been held due to the pandemic. Due to the pandemic and to keep meeting length at a minimum, no committee are given at this time.

In November, committee reports will resume. Rose Elsbecker reported that cards were sent out to Arlene Kremer and others are pending.

OLD BUSINESS: Quilts of Valor presentation was Oct. 23. Receiving quilts at this presentation will be Steve and Marian Hyde, Roger and Harold Dirks, John White, Larry Tuttle, Jack Olson, Al Hoop and Jim Shelling. Three members volunteered to help serve refreshments following the presentation.

Fall Craft Show: Marcella Stewart is the chair. The “Fall into Step” craft show will be held Nov. 13 at the National Guard Armory. There are approximately 50 spaces for vendors. McLain is chairing the concession stand. There will be a concession help sign up sheet at the November meeting. Iowa State University Football Fundraiser: Kellie Allen, chair reported if any members are interested in working this fundraiser for November, commitments are needed now. Holiday Stroll Craft Venue: Our ALA group has been offered to do the concessions on Nov. 20 at the craft show being held at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Tanya Warnell and Hellberg are co-chair. McLain chair for menu. Menu to be fall related. Walking tacos, hot dogs and chili dogs are being considered. ALA shirts: Chair is Laurel Degelau. Many ideas presented are being considered.

ALA is looking at locking in a design and ordering shirts at its November general membership meeting. Honor Guard Appreciation Dinner: Nov. 11. Menu is chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls and pie. More information to be presented at the November 2021 general membership meeting.

Culvers Tip Night: The next schedule tip night is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 6. Kitchen: The ALA Kitchen in the lower level has not had a State Health Inspection so will not be used for public events at this time.

NEW BUSINESS: Oct. 27 was the 40 & 8 Scholarship Dinner. The menu was homemade chicken & Noodle, mashed potatoes, green beans, homemade rolls and pie. Warnell, Teagan Bratland, Linda Fuller and Miller prepared the meal, in addition Barb Blake, Barb Vovos and Sponseller setup, served and cleaned up.

A new agenda format was discussed by Miller. To shorten the length of the meetings, future projects, activities and deadlines have been moved to separate sheets and will not be discussed until the appropriate month. Closing Prayer was given by Hellberg. Meeting was adjourned at 7:20 p.m. according to ritual by Miller.
