American Legion Auxiliary Unit 46 holds November meeting

The meeting was called to order at 6 p.m. on Nov. 9 by President Debra Miller. Opening prayer was given by Chaplin Dorothy Hellberg, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. After a moment in silence for the POW/MIA, the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary was recited by all. A guest, Natasha Wedgewood, was welcomed as a new member. Wedgewood is also a veteran. November birthdays were acknowledged. Secretary Pat McLain read the October minutes. Marcella Stewart made a motion seconded by Meg Sponseller to accept as read. Motion carried. In the absence of Treasurer Amy McCready, the treasurer’s report was given by Miller. Motion was made by Sponseller and seconded by Kellie Allen to accept the report as read. The motion carried.

Membership report by Sponseller indicated that the unit has 104 paid members which is 63 percent of goal for 2022. Cards were mailed out to Hellberg by Rose Elsbecker.

Old Business: Culvers Tip Night is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 6. Shifts are from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. A minimum of five volunteers are needed on each shift.

ALA Shirts Chairperson was absent, so there was no report/update. Committee packets will be emailed out to each chairperson. Round Up/Red Bag Fundraiser at Hy-Vee is in process. Allen, chairperson and Miller met with Hy-Vee’s manager and followed up with a recap email. The unit is currently waiting to hear back from Hy-Vee.

The unit will be preparing and hosting the Marshalltown VFW/American Legion Combined Honor Guard Appreciation Dinner. The appreciation dinner was held on Nov. 11 in the Lower Level of the American Legion Post 46 at 6 p.m. Jody Anderson of Anderson Funeral Homes was the guest speaker.

The Craft Show at the National Guard Armory was Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Stewart was the chairperson for this event. The Auxiliary will be selling Yule Logs, home décor and wreaths priced from $25-$50 along with a concession stand, consisting of hotdogs, sloppy joes, chips, candy bars and pop/water.

New Business: Child Abuse Prevention Services: Motion made by Hellberg and seconded by Dee Norton to donate $100. Motion carried.

Iowa Veterans Home Bingo: The ALA unit will revisit (December meeting) doing bingo with IVH residents starting in January 2022. IVH Cookies: Motion made by LaTonya Warnell and seconded by Linda Fuller to donate $200 to IVH for Holiday Cookies being served at the Christmas Parties being held in the various IVH Units. Motion carried.

Central Business District IVH Stars for Residents w/o family: 10 stars were picked and $20-$30 each will be spent from the Welfare fund for these gifts. Doo Dah’s window was decorated for Veteran’s Day by a group of West Marshall High School students led by Laurel Degelau and Miller.

Spring Craft Show: Date has been set for April 2, 2022, at the National Guard Armory.

Closing prayer was given by Hellberg followed by closing ritual by Miller.

Meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m. Next meeting is 6 p.m. on Dec. 14. Interested members and guests are welcomed.
