Marshalltown VFW airs ongoing topics
Marshalltown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 839 processed a number of business topics during the Feb. 15 monthly session.
The post charter was draped in memory of Allan Packer, a World War II Army Air Force pilot whose plane was downed and he became a POW in Germany. He died on Feb. 5, 2022.
Among decisions taken by Harry C. Harter Post veterans was approval for Russ Paul of Timber Creek Enterprise Inc. to provide new counter tops in VFW facilities meeting local restaurant codes. Veterans in attendance offered to donate funds toward the cost. Guard and officer of day, Rick Johnson, lead a discussion on difficulties for receiving poppies for annual Fall fundraising projects. He also addressed the tenderloin fundraiser set for 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 18 at 107 E. Meadow Lane quarters.
Commander Rob Shepherd reported on the Vietnam Memorial Wall coming to the area. Local veterans were to meet at 4 p.m. on Feb. 23 to bus to Tama for a planning session on hosting the wall. It is to sit at the Meskwaki School Aug. 4-7.
Bob Miller reported on VFW/American Legion Honor Guard activities, noting 15 military funerals already this year and 87 during 2021. Related to finances and supporting comments from involved families Miller said “We’re in pretty good shape.”
The veterans also voted to donate $200 from the Relief Fund to a “Comrade in Need” item.
