Retired school personnel learn about railroads

The MCRSPA met March 21 at the library. The program was “Railroad Enthusiast” presented by Wayne Gieselman.

Gieselman has been a lifelong lover of railroads. He told the group that the U.S. is the world leader in freight railways, and that trains carry more “ton miles” than any other transportation in the country. Rails are very efficient, and the average train is 1.2 miles long. Most trains today are computer and satellite “driven.”

The meeting was called to order by Carole Permar. Minutes of the December meeting were read by Barb Vana. Otto Welfring gave the treasurer’s report. There were 24 members present.

Billy Wilson announced the men’s chorus program to be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 26 at the high school. The treasurer asked members to be thinking about becoming an auditor of the treasurer’s books as the past auditor has passed away. Gary Bryant gave an updated report about the new Emergency Food Box’s location. He reported that the front patio is free to anyone who will disassemble and remove it. They hope to use the space for parking.

Three members have passed away recently. The organization buys a library book in their memory, and Permar asked what topics were of interest to those who had died. Cards will be sent to their families after the books are purchased.

Permar led a short discussion of members with health concerns. She then gave an updated report on the Fisher Community Center, and it’s hopeful that we’ll be able to have future meetings there next Fall.

The committee of Jerry and Aggie Zeihan, Gary and Joy Bryant and Glenda Barton was thanked. The next meeting will be at 1 p.m. on April 11 at the library and the program will be about Senior Opportunities at the Community Y. The social committee will be Sally Jansen, Dianne Avery, Becky Rakers and Marge Grimes.

The meeting was adjourned.
