Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary makes April plans

GLADBROOK — The wind has finally gotten tired and is quiet making for a beautiful spring day with sunshine and warmer temperatures. President Jeanne opened the meeting with flags in place and Sue Koster, acting chaplain, offering prayer on April 11. Taps followed. Four officers answered roll call with nine total attending.

The Auxiliary charter was draped in memory of four loyal members lost this year, Sandra Raum, Bonnie Johannsen, Irene Alvestad and Mavis Nelson. Memorial donation was given for each to the Gladbrook Library.

As the District Junior Conference scheduled for April 3 was cancelled, the Past President’s Junior pin was presented to Maya Goos by JoAnn Klein, of Conrad. There were no new officers elected for the 2022-23 year so the past years officers will remain for another year. The Unit does not have a candidate for Girls State this year.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and corrected. A thank you for the 68 feet of rolled carpet rags was received by the Iowa Veterans Home for their rug looms. Activities are again starting there, hoping the Covid pandemic is contained. The Tama County IVH bingo session on April 13 with Jolene asking for volunteers to help at 1:30 p.m. to escort. Marilyn Carstensen will go with her.

Koster, education chairman, reported that scholarship applications have been made available for GMG and G-R senior students. Koster also read the application changes made requiring future plans and interests of the applicants. A motion was made by Rose Russell to increase the amount of each merit award to $200 for a limit of three students awarded. Motion seconded and with no discussion, motion carried. The District scholarship and local applications are due April 15.

A motion was made by Candice Bartel to again provide $50 toward the expenses/prizes of the Carnival Kiddies parade. Motion seconded and carried. Jeanne asked for collections for the Collectors Fair to be held on June 16 in the Memorial Building. In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the celebration, the committee is seeking to have a collection of all the quilts made by Katie Grimmius and raffled each year to be displayed in the City Center upstairs, Thursday-Saturday. Sue Hamann’s collection of miniature Carnival rides will be on display in the City Center also. The Legion/Auxiliary will again have a float with the idea of a “Century of Celebrations” A Corn Carnival fundraising turkey dinner will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Memorial Building on April 24. Meals served in house or carry-out.

National is suggesting an increase in dues to be discussed and voted on at the National Convention in August to be started with the 2024 year. The Unit may also see an increase this summer on the Department level.

Officers for the Gladbrook Unit will remain the same for year 2022-23 and Data-form will be sent in.

Memorial Building cleaning days are scheduled for the week of April 25. The building will be open at 8:30 a.m. for volunteers and those who wish to help. A schedule is available.

The Auxiliary’s Mother’s Day Tea will be held at 1:30 p.m. on May 9 with special guests and membership awards, a Memorial Service and Junior to Senior graduation.

Poppy distribution will be held after school by the Juniors on May 11 with snacks offered before and a light supper after. Senior members will be asked to help in Gladbrook on May 13.

The Gladbrook SAL will host its last fish fry from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., in house or carry-out on Good Friday from the Memorial Building.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned with all singing ‘God Bless America” with Koster at the piano. Spring desserts were served by Linda Goos and Jane Sass.
