Retired School Personnel hears performance by MHS chorus

The Marshall County Retired School Personnel Association met May 16 at the Marshalltown Library. A potluck luncheon was enjoyed by all before the performance.

Members were entertained by nine students from the Marshalltown High School chorus led by instructor, Amy Ose. The soloists, duets, trio and mixed double quartet sang pieces they had performed at recent contests.

The meeting was called to order by Carole Permar, president. There were 24 members present. Minutes were read by Secretary, Barb Vana. The treasurer’s report was given by Otto Welfring. Recent expenses were for memorial books, and a donation was given to the Marshalltown High School music department.

Under old business, Welfring announced that he was taking dues for next year. Email notices will be sent in June to those who haven’t paid. Dues are $23. Members were reminded to keep track of volunteer hours. Almost anything that members don’t get paid for qualifies (such as babysitting, driving friends to appointments, church work, organizing fundraisers for other groups, etc.)

For new business, ideas for getting new members was discussed. Members were asked to reach out to anyone who is interested in education to attend the meetings; they don’t have to have been a school employee.

It was announced that Louis Springer passed away. Judy Anderson will find out what her interests were so that MCRSPA can purchase a memorial book for the library.

Sign up sheets were passed around so that people could sign up for social committees for next year and for members to give suggestions for programs.

Phil Tetzloff discussed a bill that’s on the governors’s desk to be signed concerning elder abuse.

Rita Smith reminded people that they had been informed about LaVerne Hoelscher’s funeral at 10:30 a.m. on June 1 at St. Henry’s Church.

The social committee of Doris Hildebrant, Tetzloff, Linda Holvick and Bev Risius was thanked. The next meeting will be Sept. 19. The location will be announced at a later date as the Arts & Cultural Center (formerly Fisher Comm. Center) may or may not be open by then. The committee will be MCRSPA officers.
