Marshalltown VFW sets poppies dates
Marshalltown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 839 processed plans toward multi topics during its August meeting. Plans toward the annual Buddy Poppies relief fund; new outdoor signs and public meals were aired by the 15 veterans in attendance.
Commander Rob Shepherd presided and he came in for considerable praise from active VFW leader Rick Johnson for leadership in dressing up Harry C. Harter property at 107 E. Meadow Lane during his command, including painting and acquiring new signage.
Johnson reported on the Poppies free will donations program and provided signup sheets designating volunteers to offer Poppies in front of cooperating stores for the Sept. 8-10 project. He noted plentiful supply and ordering 12,000 this year after last year’s shortage. Johnson also mentioned planning toward two public tenderloin meals as a fundraiser later this year. He also noted need for volunteer help in cleaning out the VFW shed when stored items will be sorted for sale or other riddance.
The post charter was draped during the meeting in memory of Frank Patterson.
Bob Miller’s VFW/American Legion Honor Guard report noted 65 veterans funeral participations already this year, including eight during August and nine in July. He told of local Honor Guard receiving $1,000 donation from the Shellsburg Legion Riders.
Johnson served officer of the day and guard duties; Laurel Degelau gave a Service Officers report. Other rituals included those by Adjutant Larry Tuttle; Quartermaster Roger Dirks and Chaplain Gary Scott.
Prior to the meeting two active women in veterans affairs, Betty Needs and Linda Fuller told of plans to host a meal for veterans participating in the Sept. 24 Oktemberfest Parade following that event.
