Legion Auxiliary holds fall conference

BEAMAN — Marshall County Fall Conference for the American Legion Auxiliary was held on Oct. 15 at the Beaman Memorial Hall. Coffee, juice, fruit cup and coffee cake was served by the Beaman Unit. Registration started at 9 a.m. and was $2 each. A board meeting was held at 9:30 a.m. The flags were posted at the head table. “Taps” was played by Bob Daniel of the Conrad Legion in memory of MIA/POW and deceased veterans.

County President Deb Miller called the meeting to order at 10 a.m. Parliamentarian for this meeting was Barb Blake. Invocation given by Laurel Unit President. All Units gave the Pledge of Allegiance and Auxiliary Preamble and sang the National Anthem.

Marshalltown Unit begin the Auxiliary Preamble. The Beaman Unit gave the morning welcome. Response given by Liscomb Unit President.

The 2023 Spring Conference will be hosted by the Laurel Unit.

Miller introduced special guest, the Third District President Sandy Scallon from Ackley and Daniel of the Conrad Legion. Roll call of officers taken by Secretary.

Runner motioned to dispense with the reading of Spring meeting minutes. Zern seconded. Carried.

Linnenbrink presented a bill from Klein for three past president’s pins, $107.85, two flag carrying cases $145.90, tax $17.77 and shipping $29.95, the total bill was $301.47. Runner motioned to pay Klein, Zern seconded. Carried.

The Unit reported on activities: participated in Iowa Veterans Home foreign food fair, sent girls to Girls State, cut coupons to send to military families, help with BINGO at IVH, sent treat sacks to school, money to schools for needy kids, serve lunch at Memorial and Veterans Day programs, poppies distributed in areas, one member made a Quilt of Valor for a Legion Veteran member.

IVH report from Bane: No masks are required by staff or volunteers, don’t have to be vaccinated for volunteers. Population of residents is 397. IVH will be welcoming 10 more residents in December. Gift shop open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Oct. 31 is Halloween Dance at 2 p.m., Nov. 11 Veterans Day program at 11a.m. at Malloy ARC. Dec. 3 Christmas Open House for residents, families and friends from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., cookies and drinks served. Foreign Food Fair is at 11 a.m. on March 18 at Atha Dining Room. There is a big need for volunteers to help the residents on outings at IVH.

Klein spoke on poppy orders due by Oct. 20 to department. She is also the chairperson of Unit Member of the Year applications due to her by 2023 Spring Conference in March.

Scallon spoke on Oct. 22, Third District Fall Conference held at Reinbeck. She spoke on her two projects — Miracles In Motion and Retrieving Freedom in Waverly. She spoke on her travels to many Units. Scallon presented Klein and Bane each with a Past President pin from Marshall County.

Runner gave out Marshall County Unit tray favor schedule for the IVH ladies socials. Need 30 decorated favors and a $20 check sent to Department for the candy.

Registration report given by Beaman president. Twelve members and two guests present. All Units sang “God Bless America.” Closing prayers given by Laurel Unit.
