Marshalltown VFW sets yule party

Wrapping up 2022 yearend commitments came before Marshalltown VFW Post 839 at Tuesday’s November meeting.

Tops among topics came the annual Christmas party updated to Dec. 9. On that date for Harry C. Harter Post members, only by registering before it, according to Commander Rob Shepherd hours include Happy Hour from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., preceded by a short meeting at 4:30 p.m. A “tip jar” will be available during Happy Hour. Delmar Roberts and Rick Johnson led discussion about choice of ham or turkey with mashed potatoes and other side items.

Other subjects included patching a leaky spot in the roof of the building at 107 E. Meadow Lane, improving lighting over the outdoor U.S. Flag, plus snowplowing arrangements.

Before the business session Bob Miller gave a detailed report about combined VFW/American Legion Honor Guard activities, including rifle repairs, donations and funerals. He said 93 veterans funeral participations were held this year already, including 11 for the month. Miller also told of policy for $50 donations from a whole range of veteran-connected organizations covering costs.

Shepherd reported a new refrigerator has been purchased for the meeting room to replace one that was faulty.

Laurel Degelau provided the Service Officers report, noting a new Veterans Affairs insurance plan up to $40,000. She will bring details to a later meeting.

Quartermaster Roger Dirks reported on a case of a veteran needing financial aide. Veterans in attendance chose to consider the situation further.

Other rituals were processed by Johnson, officer of the day; Gary Scott, chaplain; Pete Dumer, senior vice; Larry Tuttle, adjutant; Dirks, quartermaster and Jerry Kremer, trustee.
