Spinning Wheel Chapter hears Tootsie Roll program

The Spinning Wheel Chapter of DAR met on Jan. 20 at the Marshalltown Public Library beginning with a Soup luncheon prepared by Hostesses Madam Regent Whitney Hunt and Marlys Ankrum. There were 11 members and one guest present.

Regent Hunt then presented the Program about a proposed cookbook fundraiser with recipes contributed by DAR members. Members are asked to bring four or five favorite recipes for the cookbook, as well as stories about the origin of the recipe or pictures or stories of members’ ancestors or patriot.

The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and the American’s Creed. Marlys Ankrum, registrar, reported on a members’ resignation, a transfer of membership into the Spinning Wheel Chapter and a request from someone asking to be accepted as an Associate.

Deb Williams’ report on American Heritage & National Defense told how Tootsie Rolls accidentally saved Marines during the Korean War. The First Marine Division met the enemy at Chosin Mountain Reservoir in subfreezing temperatures. Out of ammunition, Marines called in for 60mm mortar ammo, code name “Tootsie Rolls.” The radio operator did not have the code sheets that would tell him what a “Tootsie Roll” was, but he knew the request was urgent, so he called in the order. Soon, pallets of Tootsie Roll candies parachuted from the sky to the First Marine Division. While they were not ammunition, this candy from the sky provided well needed nourishment for the troops. They also learned they could use warmed Tootsie Rolls to plug bullet holes, sealing them as they refroze. They suffered many casualties but they accomplished the goal and destroyed several enemy divisions in the process. Many credited the very survival to Tootsie Rolls. When passing the candy aisle and seeing Tootsie Rolls, think of how sweet those little chocolate snacks were to the “Chosin Few.”

A discussion was held by members about creating possible Zoom meetings to help members unable to attend stay connected.

The next meeting will be at 1 p.m. on Feb. 17 at the Marshalltown Public Library. The program will be “Conservation” with Joe Herring-district forester.
