Marshalltown VFW plans events
During the March meeting of the VFW Harry C. Harter Post 839, held at 6:30 p.m. on March 21, American Legion member Bob Miller presented the Combined Honor Guard report for February. He reported three funerals receiving military honors. The Honor Guard also conducted military honors and provided pall bearers for two funerals at the Iowa Veterans Home cemetery for two residents who did not have any family members present. Legionnaire Miller also reported two new members for the Combined Honor Guard. Sean Maday and David Sheets have been issued new uniforms and unit insignia.
Following opening ceremonies and Pledge of Allegiance, a roll call resulted in 12 members present with one new member application approved for veteran David Sheets. Post Service Officer Laurel Degelau listed upcoming events to be held at the Iowa Veterans Home including the presentation of Viet Nam Veteran pins scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on March 29 in Malloy Hall. The IVH Spring Carnival is scheduled for April 15. She also mentioned the Volunteer luncheon scheduled for 11 a.m. on April 26.
First Call nominations for future elected Officers of the Post for 2023-24 were held. The nominations of eight elected positions were received and five members stepped forward to volunteer for appointed positions after election are held in April.
Post Quarter Master Roger Dirks announced that VFW member Ray Lant, of Grinnell, will be celebrating his 100th birthday this year. Members of the Post discussed possible venues to mark this celebration later this year.
The remainder of the meeting involved discussion of the upcoming US Flag distribution on Memorial Day this year and the announcement of Post Adjutant Larry Tuttle volunteering to supervise the planned interior painting of the Post meeting hall. The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m. with a salute to the colors and closing prayer.
