Tammen gives program at 20th Century
Dorie Tammen from the Marshall County Historical Society spoke to the Twentieth Century Club on Feb. 26, at the MACC.
She shared stories about the lives and contributions of ten women in Marshalltown’s early history. Among her list were: Nettie Skiff Sanford Chapin, author and women’s rights activist; Emma Pursel, the first female embalmer; Bess Streeter Aldrich, author; Dr. Anna Arnold Hedgeman, civil rights advisor to US Presidents and Leona Wells, who was the highest paid women in the US government in her time.
Tammen’s love and knowledge of history was evident, and the group was fascinated to hear about these ten women and their achievements in medicine, education, literature, manufacturing and government.
Refreshments were provided by Shirley Mann, Amy Snyder and Gayle Hellberg.
