American Legion Auxiliary holds March meeting

The ALA Unit 46 General Meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. on March 11 by Deb Miller followed by the opening prayer, pledge of allegiance, standing in silence and the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary.

In attendance were 22 members. Barb Blake, the McClain family, the McCready family, Sheryl Woltjer and Peggy Shoer were all mentioned in the sick call.

The guest for this meeting was the Legion GM/Golf Professional and Finance Officer/Director of Operations, Dave Boles. He presented on the many building and financial updates that have taken effect at the Legion.

February meeting minutes were read by Kellie Allen and approved as read. Dorothy Hellberg gave the treasurer’s report stating that the 990 form has been filed. She also noted that the finance committee will be getting together in the next couple of weeks to do a first quarter audit. The membership report was given by Meg Sponseller. The Unit at 84% of its goal and continue to push new member recruitment.

The Girls State committee has completed interviews and have selected one person to represent Unit 46. The St. Patty’s Day Card Party committee gave a final update as well as the Foreign Food Fair committee.

Poppy distribution will take place on May 15, 16 and 17. Miller is starting to gather information and ask for volunteers to ensure a successful year.

The Auxiliary has been informed that the Iowa Veterans Home Recreation fund is critically low. A motion to make a donation to this fund was made by Sponseller and was seconded by Pam Janssen. This fund is essential to ensure residents can continue going on the various outings.

Miller is asking members to join the nominating committee. Those who would like to run for an officer position, can let her know and all candidates will be announced at the May general meeting. Elections are held in June with installation happening in July.

Upcoming ALA events and volunteer opportunities were noted to finish up the meeting.
