VFW Auxiliary holds May meeting

The May 20 meeting of the VFW Auxiliary Unit 839 was held at the Post Home with 10 members in attendance. Theresa Shepherd opened the meeting at 6:30 p.m. followed by the opening ceremonies. Chaplain Donna Mitchem led the opening prayer. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by Patriotic Instructor Kay Bell.

Treasurer Deb Miller gave the treasurer report. Diane Welch reported she had received 538 coupons. Deloris Clayton said that Iowa Veterans home Bingo will be at 9;30 a.m. on May 23. Linda Fuller reported that eight more veteran remains have been found and returned home. These veterans were from World War II and Korean War.

Clayton made a motion that we accept two new members Pam Gorham and Mike Long. Carol Ewalt seconded. These new members are welcomed to the Auxiliary.

The Unit received a letter stating that it had received the United To Combat Hunger Grant that it had applied for. The Food Drive held earlier for the Emergency Food Box will be receiving additional money for a total of $891.64. Reaching this food and money goal would not have been possible without everyone’s help.

Delegated to go to the Convention on June 28 are: Clayton, Fuller, Deb Miller, Welch and Karen Dean. Judy Schiebel made a motion that the unit donate $50 for a Basket for the convention. There will be a Silent Auction. Bell seconded the motion.

The Auxiliary joined with the Post meeting to drape for three members that have passed away. Richard Johnson, Anthony Polkiewicz and Tom Logeland, respectfully. These three men have served the country and community. Thank you for your service.

Old business: The Unit received a reward from the IVH for all of its hours members have volunteered over the past year. Motion was made to accept all officers to remain the same except Sr. Vice President. Welch offered to fill this position. Clayton proceeded to install the officers: President: Shepherd; Sr. Vice President, Welch; Jr. Vice President, Schiebel; Secretary, Fuller; Treasurer & Co-Secretary, Miller; Chaplain, Mitchem; Conductress, Fuller; Guard Ewalt; Patriotic Instructor, Bell; 3-year Trustee, Mitchem; 2-year Trustee, Ewalt; 1-year, Welch.

Upcoming date to help display wreaths Memorial Day: IVH at 10:30 a.m. — Shepherd, Dean, Clayton, Fuller; Riverside Cemetery at 1 p.m.

The American Legion Riders have asked for help with desserts for a fundraiser in Melbourne on June 28. The fundraiser is for Donny Zahnd, a veteran. Fuller was asked to make potato salad. Free will donation. Come and enjoy the meal.

The National Home Prayer was recited and the closing prayer was conducted by Mitchem. Shepherd closed the meeting according to Ritual. Next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. on June 17 at the Post Home.
