ALA Unit 46 stalls new officers at July 14 meeting

The meeting was called to order at 6:02 p.m. by Deb Miller followed by opening prayer, Pledge of Allegiance, standing in silence and the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary.

June meeting minutes were read by Kellie Allen. A motion to approve as read was made by Meg Sponseller and seconded by Liz Stewart. Dorothy Hellberg gave the treasurer’s report noting the deposits and disbursements. The Unit received many thank you notes from those who received donations from us since the June meeting. The finance committee will be meeting to put together the 2027 budget so it can be presented at the August general membership meeting. Sponseller gave the membership report stating that renewal letters have been mailed. Members can pay online, at a meeting or send their dues to the new membership chair, Trish Crosser.

Recent member activities included a Dave’s Coffee Cakes fundraiser for the Melbourne Playground Project, Law Enforcement Appreciation and Adaptive Baseball. All have proven to be very successful events. A special thank you goes out to the Morning Optimist Club for taking over flag placement on the memorial sidewalk.

Two big fundraisers that are in the works include Applebee’s on July 29 and Culver’s with a date TBD. Money raised at Applebee’s is yet to be designated whereas Culver’s funds will go towards the ongoing expenses for the Marshalltown Combined Honor Guard.

After discussion of old and new business, the new officers were sworn in to their positions. Sponseller will be relieving Deb Miller as unit president. Ginger McCready will stay in the vice president position while Crosser is stepping out of a vice president spot to take over as membership chair. Allen will continue as unit secretary and Hellberg will also stay on as treasurer. Chaplain Miriam Quigley and historian Pat McLain both stay in their positions. Linda Fuller will be replaced by Dawn Townsend as a sergeant of arms while Marcella Stewart, Barb Vovos and Marvis Drew stay on. Thank you to Miller, Fuller and Crosser for their years of service as officers.

The meeting was closed out with a list of upcoming events and volunteer opportunities. The next general membership meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Aug. 11 in the lower level of the Legion.

The meeting adjourned at 7 p.m.
