Central Iowa gardeners who want to add some ornamental grasses to the home landscape, will want to attend the Marshalltown Garden club program, Ornamental Grasses for Midwest Gardens at 11 a.m. on Oct. 5. The speaker is Aaron Steil.
Steil is the Statewide Consumer Horticulture Extension Specialist at Iowa State University. He provides information and resources for Iowans about home gardening, including information about trees & shrubs, perennials, annuals, vegetable gardening, fruit, lawns and houseplants. Steil is a graduate of ISU with a B.S. in Horticulture and an M.S. in Public Horticulture from the University of Delaware. He has spent more than 19 years with ISU, many of them with Reiman Gardens.
The colorful ornamental grasses are popular additions to home landscapes. They are easy to grow, require little maintenance, are long-lived and are relatively pest and disease-free. Several species of ornamental grasses can be grown in Iowa landscapes. Many are native to Iowa and much of the Midwest.
