• Jimai Mabil Pal made an initial appearance on a public intoxication charge and a possession or purchase of alcohol by person 18/19/20-first offense charge. Pal pleaded guilty to both charges. The fine on the public intoxication charge is $105 with a $15.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $180.75. The possession of alcohol fine is $260 with $39 surcharge and $55 in court costs for a total of $354.

• Ruffus Kparyea made an initial appearance on a domestic abuse assault charge. The preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 26. Bond is set at $2,000 cash. A no-contact order has been issued for the protected party.

• Terry Lynn Phelps Jr. made an initial appearance on a parole violation charge. Stephen Allison is appointed as counsel. The parole revocation hearing will be scheduled by the Administrative Law Judge. Phelps is being held without bond.

• Bryan Neal Chandler made an initial appearance on a theft-third degree charge. The public defender's office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 5.

• Cade Riley Bovenmyer made an initial appearance on a operating while under the influence-second offense charge and a leaving the scene of an accident-injury charge. The preliminary hearing has been waived. A substance abuse evaluation is ordered with the results submitted to the court.

Bovenmyer was also seen on a failure to give notice of change of address or name charge, a failure to maintain or use safety belts charge, an operation without registration charge, a striking fixtures on highway charge, a failure to maintain control charge and a use of an electronic device charge. Attorney Van Plumb is serving as counsel and entered not guilty pleas on these counts. A pre-trial conference is set for 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 9 in Magistrate Court.

Accidents

• On Friday, Jan. 5, an SUV driven by Julie Kay Peter, 61, of Marshalltown, was southbound on Highway 330 when it struck a deer that entered the roadway. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Peter SUV was estimated at $4,000.

• On Thursday, Jan. 4, an SUV driven by Christina Jean Sams, 47, of Union, was southbound on Hopkins Avenue when it struck a deer that entered the roadway. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Sams SUV was estimated at $4,000.

• On Tuesday, Jan. 2, a car driven by Marlon Javier Umana Navarrete, 20, of Marshalltown, was westbound on Highway 30 when it struck a deer that entered the roadway. no injuries were reported. Damage to the Umana Navarrete car was estimated at $5,000.
