• Carlos Rivas Vargas made an initial appearance on a possession of marijuana-first offense charge, a possession of cannabidiol-first offense charge, a possession of drug paraphernalia charge and a driving under suspension charge. Patrick Peters is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 12. Bond is set at $1,000 cash or surety. A substance abuse evaluation is ordered with the results submitted to the court.
• David Lance Duff made an initial appearance on a failure to appear for an arraignment hearing charge. Leah Patton will continue as counsel. The arraignment hearing will be rescheduled by the District Associate Court. Bond is set at $1,000 cash only.
• Cole Blake Purdy made an initial appearance on a parole violation charge. The parole revocation hearing will be scheduled by the Administrative Law Judge. Purdy is being held without bond.
• Timothy Wayne Jarrell made an initial appearance on an unauthorized use of a credit card charge and a possession of marijuana-first offense charge. Dusty Clements is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 12. A substance abuse evaluation is ordered with the results submitted to the court.
• A 14-year-old male made an initial appearance on a curfew violation charge and a no valid driver’s license charge. A pre-trial conference is set for 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 4 in Magistrate Court.
• Elizabeth Cervantes Cruz made an initial appearance on an unlawful passing of a school bus-first offense charge. A pre-trial conference is set for 9:30 a.m. Dec. 11 in Magistrate Court.

Accidents
• On Tuesday, Oct. 29, a car driven by Samara Ann Dean, 21, of Marshalltown, was northbound on Highway 330 when it struck a deer that entered the roadway from the east ditch. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Dean car was estimated at $4,000.
• On Monday, Oct. 28, a pickup driven by Matthew Stephen Feld, 31, of Marshalltown, was southbound on Lafayette Avenue when it struck a deer that entered the roadway. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Feld pickup was estimated at $3,000.
• On Sunday, Oct. 27, a pickup driven by Larry Duane Hansen, 68, of Marshalltown, was westbound on Iowa Avenue when it struck a deer that entered the roadway from the south ditch. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Hansen pickup was estimated at $4,000.
