RACOM donates $25,000 to MHS Roundhouse renovation

Leaders of the RACOM Corporation decided to give back to a school that has given so much to them.

The radio communications company, led by president Mike Miller, donated $25,000 to the Marshalltown High School Roundhouse renovation project.

Miller is a 1986 MHS graduate and his sisters, Carrie Loney (1993) and Susan Brennan (1988), are also graduates of the school. Carrie’s husband, Nick Loney, is the chief financial officer at RACOM and a 1993 MHS graduate.

The company was founded in Marshalltown by their father, Gregg Miller, who passed away in 2006.

“Marshalltown has been very supportive of our expansion and growth,” Mike Miller said.

Miller said he remembers how impressive the Roundhouse was when he went to MHS and he wants to see it regain that status for his children.

“That building is sort of an iconic symbol of our town and we want to support the renovation.” he said.

Gary Schaudt, fundraising co-chair for the Roundhouse project, said they are glad to have this donation.

“It’s nice that they are supporting this,” Schaudt said.

Other businesses pledging at the platinum ($10,000 to $24,999) or diamond level ($25,000 or more) to date have been Emerson, Times-Republican, Farmers Savings Bank, Great Western Bank, Independent Insurance Services, Shomo Madsen Insurance and Attorneys At Law (Moore, McKibben, Goodman, Lorenz, Beals, Horn, Meade, Heitmann and Ruopp). McFarland Clinic also donated more than $25,000 through a payroll deduction effort by Marshalltown providers and employees.

The fundraising is now at $440,000 in an effort to reach the $1 million Martha-Ellen Tye Foundation matching grant. The total goal is $3.85 million.

“We have a lot of work left to do, but thanks to the generosity of donors thus far, I feel the $3.85 million dollar goal is well within our reach,” Schaudt said.

Bids for the Roundhouse project are expected to be approved at the Oct. 21 Marshalltown School Board meeting, with construction to begin later this year.

Starting at $4.38/week.
