New dental office has bilingual staff
Hintz Family Dentistry has opened up an office at 15 E. Southridge Road in Marshalltown.
The dental office offers all teeth cleaning, whitening and repairing service except for impacted wisdom teeth extraction and orthodontic work.
“We try to do everything we can here in the office so we don’t have to refer people out constantly,” said Dr. Jerad Hintz.
The dentist, who lives in Bondurant, and his staff at all three dental offices – Des Moines, Ankeny and Marshalltown – are all bilingual. Hintz got interested in learning about Spanish and Latino cultures when he served as a missionary in Chile from 1998-2001. On his mission trip, he became immersed in the Chilean culture and decided he wanted to find a way to give back to people of other ethnicities. He completed his undergraduate education in Spanish and biology, then completed his dentistry education. Hintz first opened up a practice in Ankeny and soon noticed how the majority of his patients were Hispanic and were willing to travel in order to receive dental services from people who spoke Spanish. He then opened a second office in Des Moines, serving a group of patients that are predominantly Hispanic.
“It’s a difficult situation when someone can’t understand what a dentist wants to do. It can be a high stress situation,” Hintz said.
In late July, Hintz Family Dentistry opened its third location in Marshalltown with two main goals in mind. First, Hintz wanted to serve Marshalltown’s Hispanic population and provide low-income folks quality dental care by accepting Medicaid and wellness plans.
“Our main focus of the practice is serving Hispanic populations and other underserved groups,” Hintz said. “It’s pretty unusual for a dentist to be bilingual and all four dentists at all locations are.”
Hintz is the only dentist at the Marshalltown office for now, with plans to add more staff members. He and his wife have five children with a sixth on the way. In his spare times Hintz likes to garden, play the piano and sing.
“We are pretty busy now,” Hintz said.
Hintz Family Dentistry is accepting new patients and its office is open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. To schedule an appointment, call 641-753-1374.
