Dance club wins liquor license fight
The local Ibiza Dance Club, which had been without a liquor license for three months, will re-open Friday.
The business at 102 W. Main St. was granted a liquor license recently by the city when it decided not to appeal an Aug. 2, state of Iowa administrative law judge decision.
That decision reversed a unanimous May 23 Marshalltown City Council vote denying the business a liquor license.
Attorney Michael Marquess of Hinshaw, Danielson, & Marquess, of Marshalltown, who has represented local owner Oscar Sanchez, said his client was looking forward to doing business over the Labor Day weekend.
“He has a ‘soft’ opening planned,” said Marquess. “He is looking forward to it, and is excited to get the business launched.”
A DJ will help kick things off Friday, while other events are planned for Saturday and Sunday.
Under Sanchez, the business was previously known as Wild Coyotes Sports Bar & Grill, but was changed to Ibiza in June.
Weighing on the the council during its May 23 deliberations was a report from Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper who said 103 calls had been made to Palm Beach, a Sanchez-owned restaurant and tavern at 1010 Lincolnway, from March 30, 2014 to May 14, 2016.
However, during a July 18 fact-finding hearing by a judge with the Alcoholic Beverages Division, it was reported by MPD officers the department had more problems with other taverns.
Immediately after the May 23 vote, Sanchez, who has lived in Marshalltown 27 years, alleged the city was discriminating against him, and said he would seriously consider closing Ibiza, Palm Beach and Ay Caramba, a downtown restaurant he owns at 12 N. First St.
