Weekend house fire under investigation

Authorities continue to investigate a weekend house fire.

At 2:34 a.m. Sunday, the Marshalltown Fire Department responded with the Marshalltown Police Department nd Central Iowa Healthcare EMS to 519 N. Center St., on a reported house fire.

On arrival by local police, fire was observed coming from the windows on the north side of the residence. On the arrival of firefighters, heavy fire conditions were observed on both floors of the structure. Police told arriving fire crews that the home has been vacant for a couple of years. Crews attacked the fire from the exterior initially and gradually worked their way into the building. Access to the second floor was gained from the exterior using ladders as the fire had consumed in the interior stairway.

Fire crews extinguished the fire and spent several hours searching out and extinguishing hot spots in the walls, ceiling and attic. No injuries were reported.
