Filing period under way

Marshalltown School Board incumbents Miller, Fletcher to defend seats

With less than a week to go in the Marshalltown School Board election filing period, two incumbent board members have submitted candidacy paperwork.

There are a total of four seats up in the Sept. 12 school board election. Board members Mike Miller and Ben Fletcher, both initially board-appointed to fill vacancies in 2016, will run for their respective seats.

Miller ran in the 2016 election to keep the seat he was selected to and is running again this year to retain the seat, per Iowa Code.

The Sept. 12 election is the first eligible election for Fletcher to run in, as he was appointed October of 2016 and must be voted in by the public to keep his place. While Miller’s seat is up for a four-year term, Fletcher’s seat, which is scheduled again for the 2019 election, is up for a two-year term.

That is because, per Iowa Code, a board-appointed member must run in both the next eligible election, in this case an election involving all Marshalltown Community School District voters, as well as the election on that seat’s normal election cycle.

Board President Bea Niblock and member Kendall Derby have not yet filed for re-election to their respective seats. Both Niblock’s and Derby’s seats will be up for four-year terms in this election.

To file, an interested person must first complete an affidavit of candidacy and collect the signatures of 50 eligible voters within the school district. The necessary forms can be picked up at the Central Administration Office, 1002 S. 3rd Ave. from Board Secretary Brian Bartz.

The affidavit and petition paperwork can also be found at the Iowa Secretary of State website. The link for the affidavit is sos.iowa.gov/elections/pdf/candidates/affidavit.pdf, and the link for a nomination petition is sos.iowa.gov/elections/pdf/candidates/nompetnonpartisan.pdf

The deadline to file for the Sept. 12 school board election is 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3 at the Central Administration Office, 1002 S. 3rd Ave. The documents should be submitted to Bartz by that deadline.
