Fitness enthusiasts and beginners have another workout option with the opening of Planet Fitness, located at the Marshalltown Mall.

The Planet Fitness franchise, based in Hampton, New Hampshire, has over 1,400 locations across the country, with several in Iowa.

“We feel our Iowa Planet Fitness locations have been very successful, and we thought opening one in Marshalltown would be a a good fit,” said Nika Corwin, who serves at marketing coordinator for Planet Fitness.

Two types of membership plans are offered; the classic $10 per month membership and the PF Black Card plan, at $21.99 per month.

“Black Card members can go to any Planet Fitness, bring a guest for free, and use unlimited hydro massage chairs and beds,” Corwin said.

All Planet Fitness members have unlimited access to their home club and the support of staff, with free fitness training. Perks of being a Black Card member also include: use of tanning, red and infrared light therapy, WIFI usage, and discounts on merchandise.

How does Planet Fitness differ from other gyms?

“We’re known for being a judgment free zone,” Corwin said. “We cater to first time gym users and people starting back up again. We just want to make sure they feel there is a welcoming environment.”

A special $1 down on either membership package is good now through January 31.

The Marshalltown location employs four full-time staff members, and eight part-time.

“We’re hoping to get a lot of memberships, and have the community support us,” Corwin said.

A grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Saturday, Jan. 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Prizes and memberships will be given away. Refreshments will be served.
