McGregors to move to mall temporarily

McGregors Furniture will relocate to the soon-to-be vacant Younker’s space at the Marshalltown Mall.

Boh Kurylo, executive vice president in charge of brokerage at the Lerner Company, the entity based in Omaha managing the mall, confirmed McGregors move in a statement made to the Times-Republican Friday afternoon.

“We are negotiating a lease with them (McGregors) on a temporary basis,” he said. “We would love to keep them long-term, but that is up to them.”

McGregors spokesperson Erin McGregor elaborated on Kurylo’s statement Friday.

“We have signed a temporary lease to go into the Younker’s space once they are done at the end of the month,” she said. “We will be at the temporary location until our (downtown) building is ready.”

That structure, like many Central Business District businesses, suffered extensive damage as a result of the July 19 EF3 tornado.

McGregor said it the temporary location “is a perfect alternative in the short term … our heart is downtown. We have been in the (111 W. Main Street) building since 1929. It means a lot to the family. However, we do not have an option at this point. We have a lot of work (on the building) to do … I would estimate a minimum of six months.”

In addition to its furniture store, Marshalltown is also home to McGregors corporate headquarters.

The company also operates stores in Coralville, Mason City Ottumwa and Waterloo.

Currently, the Learner Company is in talks with around eight to nine Marshalltown retailers whose stores have been impacted by the July 19 tornado, who are seeking a new locale in which to set up shop.

Leases are available for month-to-month, six-month and one year-long durations. For more information, Kurylo may be reached at 402-502-4707.
