Black Tire is back

Local bike shop makes temporary move to former Sports Page location at mall

T-R PHOTO BY ADAM SODDERS - Many Main Street business owners have had to adapt after their stores suffered water, wind and debris damage in the July 19 tornado. Black Tire Bike Co. co-owner Matt Gerstandt, pictured here, said his business has temporarily moved to the former Sports Page location at the Marshalltown Mall, 2500 S. Center St., from its normal 117 W. Main St. location. Black Tire will be open for business at the new spot 9 a.m. Monday.

Black Tire Bike Co. co-owners Matt and Cassandra Gerstandt, along with many other Main Street business owners, were met with destruction as the July 19 tornado swept through town.

Now, the bike shop is back with full inventory and services at the Marshalltown Mall, 2500 S. Center St., and will be ready for customers 9 a.m. Monday.

“The new location is at what was formerly known as Sports Page here in town,” Matt Gerstandt said. “We leased it through the mall, which has been excellent to work with so far. We actually got a really fast turnaround and fast answers on it.”

The original Black Tire location, 117 W. Main St., saw extensive water damage and the building will take a new shape by the time the bike shop returns there in about six months.

“When the building is complete (at the Main Street location) with the construction that Brycon (LLC) is doing, then we’ll move back there,” Gerstandt said. “All of our inventory was fine, but we are removing the third floor, then we’re going to have a two-story building and build a new roof on it.”

Black Tire customers will be able to expect the same products that were sold at the Main Street location, including bicycles, helmets, car racks, seats, gloves and many more accessories.

Gerstandt said the new spot will also feature the bike services that were available previously.

As the shop’s crew acclimates to the new surroundings, Cassandra Gerstandt said the exact store hours have yet to be determined.

“We’re going to feel it out a little bit and see how much traffic we’re getting,” she said. “We were very fortunate to get this spot, it’s very exciting.”
