Friends and colleagues mourn loss of transit administrator

Stone

From Mayor Joel Greer to Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper to colleagues, there has been an outpouring of condolences for the late City Transit Administrator Richard Stone.

Stone, 55, died Oct. 17 at his Des Moines-area home. He worked for the city for 17 years.

Greer called for a moment of silence at a city council meeting earlier this week, and complimented Stone for doing “a nice job” with the transit system.

“Rich was a good man, a good professional and a good friend,” Tupper said. “He was one of the first city employees to welcome me when I was hired. He always had a smile and a kind word for me. I am sorry for his loss. I have his family and friends in my thoughts and prayers.”

Colleague Jerri Frye posted this on the Mitchell Family Funeral Home Tribute Wall: “Rich was one of the kindest men I have encountered; always a smile, a kind word, truly grateful. He is missed. May peace be with his family and those who loved him.”

Ginger McCready of Marshalltown’s Sign Creations also posted on the Tribute Wall: “It has been my pleasure to work with Rich since he took over as director of the Marshalltown Municipal Transit. Sometimes a challenge to decal the vehicles he would purchase, but always worked out in the end.”

Cremation rites have been accorded, according to Mitchell. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at E-Free Church, 3111 S. Sixth St, Marshalltown.
