Editor's Note: This is the third of four articles featuring the Marshalltown High School band's 1969 trip to Anaheim, Calif. to play at Disneyland, before the Iowa Club in Long Beach, and at the Rose Bowl parade in Pasadena. Accompanying the group was Times-Republican reporter Lois Jacobs. The second installment centered on Dec. 30 activities, such as the television taping of a high school band competition where MHS placed second. The final installment runs Sunday.
A tour of Universal Studios and Marineland offered band, staff and chaperones a brief respite from practices and competition on day four -- Dec. 31 -- according to participant Ann (Schlesinger) Stephens of Lawrence, Kan. Meanwhile, some enjoyed the Charter House swimming pool, video games or went shopping. Stephens said that some band members stayed awake to watch the new year/decade come in, but were also expected to attend a 5 a.m. Jan. 1 breakfast.
