Orpheum grand re-opening is Friday

As work is nearing completion on tornado repairs at the Orpheum Theater Center in Marshalltown, plans are in place for a Grand Re-Opening on Friday in conjunction with the first Live After 5 concert at the theater. The evening will feature free food for the first 200 people, the free Live After 5 concert (featuring B2wins) and the first free Family Summer Movie (Mary Poppins Returns).

“As everyone who experienced tornado damage can attest, it’s been a long journey since July 19,” Bob Untiedt, Orpheum Theater Center director, said. “We are beyond thrilled to be preparing for our Grand Re-Opening and we’re hopeful that hundreds and hundreds of people will be on hand to help us celebrate. The B2wins are a fun-loving, high-energy and really talented duo from Des Moines who have taken Central Iowa by storm since they began performing. I’m certain that those who see them here on June 21 will be looking forward to seeing them again at the Marshalltown Art Festival in July.”

Also on Friday, the Friends of the Orpheum Theater Advisory Committee will offer a free meal to the first 200 people at the concert, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The summer fare will be provided by Your Plate or Mine, the Orpheum’s coffee shop vendor. Once the free food is gone, Your Plate or Mine will be selling food from its shop. Beverages will also be offered for sale during the evening.

The Live After 5 free outdoor concert series runs every Friday evening from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. June 21 through Aug. 23 in the parking lot on the east side of the Orpheum Theater. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring some friends and lawn chairs to enjoy the music in the shade of the building. Food and beverages are offered for sale each week. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved inside to the Black Box Theater.

Also beginning on the Grand Re-Opening weekend, the Orpheum’s Summer Family Movie Series kicks off with “Mary Poppins Returns.” The free family movies will show at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. each Friday and 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturdays through July courtesy of several local movie sponsors. The concession stand will be open with items for sale. Tickets for the free movies must be obtained in advance from one of the Family Movie Series sponsors: Black Tire Bike Company, Farmer’s Savings Bank, GNB Bank, Home Federal Savings Bank, Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce, Marshalltown Public Library, Smokin’ G’s, Your Plate or Mine (Orpheum Coffee Shop) and United Bank & Trust.

The Orpheum Theater Center is owned and operated by Iowa Valley Community College District.
