Anson Park moves one step closer to renovations

T-R FILE PHOTO Most of Marshalltown city parks will be closed to the public starting Monday.

The Marshalltown City Council ordered construction on improvements to Anson Park through a resolution Monday night.

The construction order is required to put the project out to bid. A public hearing required by Iowa law is slated for the next regular council meeting at 5:30 p.m. on July 22.

The engineer’s cost opinion is $162,061 for the project.

The 2019 Iowa Valley Leadership class selected Anson Park as its project for this year. The class raised more than $40,000 for purchasing and installing wheelchair-accessible playground equipment at the park.

The plans for the park include putting in an all-inclusive merry-go-round (where a wheelchair could roll onto, with a feature that secures the chair), an accelerator swing that could hold a person in place, and a sensory music panel consisting of a xylophone, drums and chimes.

Other additions that are part of the remodel include parking stalls along Fourth Avenue as well as sidewalk improvements.

Anson Park is located at 301 E. Anson St. next to Anson Elementary School. The city would accept a bid in August and work would likely begin in September. Per state law, the city must accept the lowest “responsive and responsible” bid.
