Riverview Park provides space for families to camp
TR PHOTO BY LOGAN METZGER Riverview Park is the only park with a campsite in Marshalltown with plenty of playgrounds to boot. It has amenities ranging from a basketball court to a rentable shelter.
Editor’s note: This twice weekly series will spotlight some of Marshalltown’s 22 parks. Parks are a way for families to enjoy the outdoors without leaving the city and a way for the city to bring the outdoors to families.
Riverview Park is the biggest park in Marshalltown at 93.6 acres. Its large size means it can serve a large community like Marshalltown easily.
Geoff Hubbard, director of Marshalltown Parks and Recreation, says Riverview Park is the most heavily used park in Marshalltown and it is always hopping with activity.
The park has three open-air shelters with grills and three enclosed rentable shelters, two of which have air conditioning. These are perfect for cookouts, graduation parties and family reunions. The park also has a large quantity of picnic tables spread all across the park.
Riverview Park is the only park in Marshalltown with camping spots. The campground has space to accommodate large RVs with drive through sites, as well as tents. It has 10 full hookup sites, 30 electrical hookup sites and seven camper parking pads.
Campsites are available on a first-come first-serve basis which means no reservations. To check availability contact the campground host or call 641-754-5715 extension 4 for additional information.
Riverview Park has restroom facilities open to the public as well as a shower facility for campers. Each of the rentable shelters also have bathrooms inside.
The park has three playground areas with lots of different equipment for kids to enjoy. These include various slides and monkey bars, baby swings and regular swings, a fireman’s pole, different climbing features, tunnels and animal springers.
The fun doesn’t just end with the playground however, because there are plenty of activities for adults to enjoy. These include tennis courts, a basketball court and an 18 hole disc golf course. There is also an entrance to the Linn Creek Recreational Trail which goes out to Grimes Farm.
“This park sees a lot of diverse users, from families on the playgrounds to people playing with their dogs at the dog park,” Hubbard said.
The Marshalltown Dog Park is part of Riverview Park and is split into two sections, one for big dogs and one for little dogs. It is open 5:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. and costs $2 per dog.
Riverview Park is located 402 Woodland St. next to the Iowa River.
