Organizing event being held for Sen. Bernie Sanders in Marshalltown Sunday

An organizing event for presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Marshalltown Public Library in an event called the “Marshalltown Barnstorm.”

Sanders visited Marshalltown June 8. He formally announced his candidacy in February.

He has served as the junior U.S. Senator from Vermont since 2007, and previously was the state’s at-large congressman from 1991 to 2007. This makes Sanders the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history.

Sanders is a proponent of Medicare-for-all, wants to expand Social Security, combat climate change by passing a Green New Deal, and is in favor of college for all and canceling all student debt.

Last month, Sanders announced a legislative plan to cancel all $1.6 trillion of U.S. student loan debt, alongside colleagues in the House of Representatives, including Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash).

According to RealClearPolitics, Sanders is polling at 14 percent of the vote among 20 people running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.
