Area Iowa Valley board directors talk election plans

Along with members of area city councils and school boards, some members of the Iowa Valley Community College District Board of Directors are making a decision on whether to run for their seat again in 2019.

The seats of two area directors are among those up in the Nov. 5 election. One is held by Chris Brodin, who represents Marshalltown’s first and fourth wards as well as parts of eastern Marshall County. The other is held by Deborah Crosser, who represents an area that includes the BCLUW, Green Mountain-Garwin, Hubbard-Radcliffe and Eldora-New Providence school districts, as well as part of the Gladbrook-Reinbeck district.

Brodin said he plans to again file papers to run this year. He is finishing his first term as a board director after being elected in 2015.

“I want to see us continue forward to get changes done with the bond referendum and then also with a new chancellor,” he said.

Brodin said he is proud of the district’s leadership team and has enjoyed working on the board’s finance committee during his term.

“One of the things that drove me to start there and still does is just being in partnership with economic development. That is just so vital,” he said.

Crosser said she will not seek re-election this year after spending two terms on the board.

“During the past eight years, I have watched the district make great progress with several key initiatives,” she said. “In terms of leadership, I believe the board’s involvement and support have never been stronger.”

Crosser said she’s helped oversee the district’s success in accreditation, compliance, strategic planning and institutional effectiveness since being elected to the board in 2011.

Those wishing to run for one of the four overall seats up on the Iowa Valley board must file nomination papers with board secretary Barb Jennings between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from Aug. 26 to Sept. 19. On Sept. 19, papers can be filed no later than 5 p.m.

Papers can be taken to the District Administration Office, 3702 S. Center St., to be filed. Nomination papers must include at least 50 authentic signatures from residents living in the corresponding director district.

There are two Iowa Valley board seats up in 2019 outside the Marshalltown area.
