Former Tama man faces murder charge

Damion Lamont Chavez, 19, identified as formerly Tama area, faces charges of first-degree murder and first-degree robbery. A deputy sheriff in Lowndes County, Ga., stopped a car driving on Interstate 75 and discovered Chavez. He was arrested without incident on Oct. 13.

Chavez had attended South Tama schools.

He faces the charges in the death of Mohammed Yaqoub, 28, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He awaits extradition in Lowndes County Jail in Valdosta, about 20 miles north of the Florida border, according to the Fort Dodge Messenger. Chavez was being sought since Oct. 11 incident.

Along with a 16-year-old, Chavez was arrested following what police say was a drug deal that went wrong. That juvenile faces charges in adult court.

Tate Martinson, of Fort Dodge, was not initially named by police as a manhunt began for Chavez. He was arrested Oct. 12 and also charged with first-degree robbery.
