The rain might have dampered the Back Roads Junk-It Trail event on Saturday, but participating businesses made up for the gloomy weather with extended hours on Sunday.
The Back Roads Junk-It Trail event has been held twice a year during the last three years. Organizer Vicky Daters, owner of Reclaimed Treasures on Main in Haverhill said the event began Friday, Oct. 4 and ended Sunday. Thirty businesses in Central Iowa signed up to participate. Some local businesses are:
– Marshalltown: Main Street Antiques, The Barn, Relics Midwest, Ken's Antique Collections and The Main Street Thrifty Buzzarr.
– Haverhill: Picker's Emporium and Reclaimed Treasures on Main.
– Laurel: Hotger's Country Store, Industrial Lace and Pitchfork Primitives and Fodder.
– Melbourne: Buzzed Bee Meadery.
– State Center: Frickeville, Pack Rats Palace and E-29 Pickers At the Red Barn.
– Clemons: Cedarhill Creations.
Daters said more than 500 people walked the trail and went to the different stores.
The Back Roads Junk-It Trail highlights the antiques found in mom and pop stores off of the beaten path.
"This event tells people of these different locations that might be hidden," she said. "This time we've had people from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas, all the neighboring states. There was a family who made this their vacation because they love antiquing."
To help people navigate the trail, maps are made available on the event website and at participating businesses.
Daters said the businesses offer discounts, break out antiques that are normally not seen and some even provide food such as hot dogs and ice cream cones.
"For some people, this is about companionship and time spent with their best friends or spouses," she said. "There was a group of five girlfriends that came through. This was their together time. For a lot of people, this is about the art of negotiation and the deal. Others like to check out the different shops and get out with the people they love and spend quality time together."
More and more people have trekked the Trail every year and Daters has mainly used Facebook as the primary way to spread the word. The October event brought the interest of 2,000 Facebook people.
