Second Gilman man charged with forgery

Joel Tyler Hammond, 25, Gilman, was arrested by Marshalltown police Friday on a warrant and taken to jail, according to court records. He is charged with theft-third degree, identify theft and forgery. All are Class D felonies.

Between Aug. 9 and Aug. 31, Hammond cashed seven different checks totaling $1,340 from

Tana Johnson. She reported the checks were stolen while she was hospitalized and reported the theft earlier this year. All seven checks were written to Hammond and signed by him when cashed. Hammond is a friend of Baylee Austin Waldo of Gilman.

Waldo, Johnson’s grandson, was arrested last week and charged with cashing 11 of Johnson’s checks among other felony charges.

Capt. Brian Batterson of the MPD said the suspects were identified cashing the checks from a local retailer’s videos.

At his initial appearance Monday, Hammond was appointed a public defender and ordered held on $5,000 cash or surety bond.

Hammond’s preliminary hearing is Dec. 9.
