Compost center to close for season Dec. 22

There is still time to bring leaves and yard debris to the city's compost facility at 900 Woodland Drive.

However, residents should not procrastinate -- the facility closes 4 p.m. Dec. 22.

Marshalltown resident only have six days to finish up yard work, tree and bush trimming.

Garbage haulers will take those items away will not take those items away, either.

They will not pick up trees, branches, leaves, brush, or yard and garden waste for disposal at the landfill.

Public works director Justin Nickel made the seasonal closing announcement recently and said the facility took in an estimated $66,000 in revenue this calendar year.

"It appears this is similar to other non-tornado years but I would have to double-check," Nickel said. "We did take in some leftover tornado debris which had been stored elsewhere, such as the Marshalltown Water Works. Therefore, we did spend time on tornado debris and management this year."

The street department processes the brush and leaves and yard waste into wood chip mulch and compost, which is sold to residents.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and 12-4 p.m. Sunday.
