Man assaults fellow inmate at local jail
Guyan Michael Garrett-Lucas, 23, of Marshalltown and an inmate at the Marshall County jail was arrested by a deputy Thursday and charged with assault causing bodily injury after he punched another inmate multiple times in the head.
Sheriff Steve Hoffman said it was not known why Garrett-Lucas committed the crime, but that he had a history of such assaults.
At his initial appearance Friday, a magistrate issued a no contact order protecting the victim from Garrett-Lucas, and appointed a public defender to represent him. He was ordered held on $1,000 cash or surety bond.
The charge is a simple misdemeanor, which carries a maximum jail term not to exceed one year and a mandatory fine of at least $250 but not more than $1,500.
His preliminary hearing is Jan. 20.
