City council member running for state House

Cahill

Marshalltown Democrat Sue Cahill announced her candidacy for the District 71 Iowa State Representative position Thursday.

District 71 is comprised of Marshalltown; and Bangor, Liscomb, Vienna, Taylor and Marion townships.

The seat is held by Mark Smith of Marshalltown who announced his retirement from state government last year. He was elected as the interim chair of the Iowa Democratic Party on Feb. 15.

On Thursday Smith announced his support for Cahill.

“Sue Cahill has been an active member of our community for 30 years and she will be a strong voice for Marshalltown in the Iowa House,” Smith said. “It’s necessary we elect Sue to continue fighting for the values we hold dear here in Marshall County. I will be working hard to elect Sue to the Iowa House and I encourage the voters of District 71 to join me in supporting her.”

Cahill is an educator for the Marshalltown Community School District. She trains new teachers.

“I taught at the same school for 18 years and in the Marshalltown district for over 20 years, where I have seen students of mine turn into young adults and start families of their own,” Cahill said. “While many are accomplished professionals in Marshalltown giving back to their community, I’ve seen too many leave our state or our community for Des Moines and other communities. It’s essential to keep and attract families here to Marshalltown with strong public schools, affordable and accessible healthcare, and expansive skilled trade programs.”

Cahill is also a public servant. She was elected to Marshalltown’s first ward in 2017, and she still holds the position.

Cahill said serving on the Marshalltown City Council for more than two years has given her the opportunity to help numerous community projects come to fruition and improved the lives of residents throughout town.

Cahill also serves on the Marshalltown Youth Foundation, which helps fund music, arts and sports programs for children such as the Marshalltown Read by Third Campaign, which supports educational success for all students.

She is an active member and leader of the Marshalltown Education Association and the Iowa State Education Association. Cahill attends St. Mary Church of the St. Francis Assisi Parish.

She and her husband John Cahill were married 24 years before he died in 2006. Cahill has six adult children.

Marshalltown resident and Republican Tony Reed also announced his candidacy for the District 71 seat Jan. 31.

The election is Nov. 3.
