‘Have songs, will travel’

Marshalltown Men’s Chorus singers continued a local tradition last year by serenading residents to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Businesses, schools, nursing homes and private residences were visited. Central Iowa residents, there is still time to order a singing valentine for your sweetheart.

But do not delay.

The Marshalltown Men’s Chorus (MMC) is again offering Singing Valentines.

On Saturday, MMC spokesperson Larry Pfantz of Marshalltown said orders are trickling in.

“Men have a tendency to procrastinate on things like this,” he said. “But in the two days before Feb. 14 the orders come in like crazy.”

In its 15 years of performances the talented teams of singers has brought smiles — and tears — to the faces of recipients.

Members of the chorus will perform all day on Feb. 14, starting at 7 a.m. and concluding around 5:30 p.m., traveling throughout Marshalltown and neighboring communities.

“We do a lot of performances in Conrad,” Pfantz said.

Several groups of singers will be dispatched to accommodate requests.

On average, the chorus delivers 90 performances.

Businesses, nursing homes, residences and restaurants have all hosted the singing teams.

Pfantz said the teams strive to arrive at the ordered time but some “wiggle room” is appreciated.

There are no restrictions on who can receive a Singing Valentine. Customers may send them to friends, colleagues, parents, children and friends.

“We’ve been sent to local retailers and businesses where we sang for everyone,” Pfantz said.

The cost is $25 and includes two to three “sweetheart” songs performed in four or five-part harmony, a red silk rose and customized Valentine card.

Order and payment must be received by 6 p.m. Feb. 13 so the teams have a chance to coordinate their routes.

Mail or phone orders to: Marshalltown Men’s Chorus, 208 Wauconda Rd. Marshalltown 50158, or contact Pfantz at 641-753-7275.

Payments must be received prior to scheduled performance.
