Man threatens to kill woman

McCarthy

Matthew John McCarthy, 42, Marshalltown, was arrested by local police and taken to jail Tuesday on charges of first degree harassment, false imprisonment and two counts of domestic abuse.

Capt. Brian Batterson of the Marshalltown Police Department said officers were dispatched to the UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown emergency department Tuesday where the victim admitted herself for treatment.

During the investigation police determined McCarthy threatened to kill the victim if she reported he had beaten her about the face and body. Police also learned McCarthy had forcefully held the victim back and assaulted her when she attempted to leave the residence.

First degree harassment and domestic abuse-second offense are aggravated misdemeanors punishable by up to two years in jail and a fine of between $625 and $6,250.

False imprisonment is a serious misdemeanor punishable by a maximum jail term not to exceed one year. A mandatory fine of at least $250 but not more than $1,500 may be imposed.

At his initial appearance Tuesday, a magistrate ordered him held on $5,000 bond. Also, the magistrate appointed him a public defender, and placed a no contact order against him, meaning he can not contact the victim.

McCarthy’s preliminary hearing is March 6.
