22-year-old dies in Marshalltown shooting

Marshalltown Police Department tape off an area on Union Street following a fatal Wednesday night shooting.

A 22-year-old man is dead and another man injured after a Wednesday night shooting in Marshalltown.

The Marshalltown Police Department is investigating the incident that occurred at 9:20 p.m. on Union Street.

Upon arrival, officers found a 22-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. He was critically injured and died on scene. A 27-year-old man was also found on scene with gunshot injuries and transported to UnityPoint — Marshalltown for treatment.

The names of the victims are being withheld pending family notifications.

The investigation of this incident is ongoing and no arrests have been made, according to Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper.

“We will hold whoever is responsible for this accountable,” Tupper said. “I would like the community to know that when it comes to a danger to the public, anytime there is a fatal shooting and there has been no arrest, it is a concern.”

However, the chief said he is confident this was not random.

“Whoever shot knew the victims and this was a targeted act of violence,” he said.

Tupper said maintaining the safety of the people of Marshalltown is his top priority.

He said the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is assisting with the investigation along with the Marshall County Attorney’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office.

Tupper is hoping people will come forward with information about the shooting. He said it is believed that there were witnesses but no one is talking about what happened at this time.

“This is all senseless and tragic and I am pleading with the public, if you have information, to contact law enforcement,” Tupper said.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact the Marshalltown Police Department at 641-754-5725. Additionally, tips may be submitted by calling 641-753-1234, or via text messaging by texting the word “marshall” followed by the tip to CRIMES (274637), or online at www.marshallcountycs.com.

All tips are completely anonymous and could earn a reward of up to $1,000 if the tip results in an arrest.

Two shootings, two weeks

Wednesday night’s fatal shooting is the second to happen in Marshalltown in two weeks. The first shooting occurred March 15. Blake C. Thomas, 27, of Marshalltown died in the early morning hours that day.

Mustafa F. Muhammad, 30, is in custody at the Marshall County Jail and is charged with first-degree murder.

Two fatal shootings in two weeks is not normal, Tupper said. Marshalltown does not see a lot of gun violence to begin with.

“The first shooting was a result of a confrontation gone wrong at a house party,” he said. “We are piecing together what happened last night.”
