City suspends fare collections, postpones meetings

The Marshalltown Municipal Transit is suspending its fare collection temporarily effective Monday.

“Which means riders will no longer need to pay to ride, to limit the potential spread of COVID-19,” according to Kevin Pigors, transit administrator. “Additionally, riders who can safely do so should get on and off the bus through the back doors. Anyone needing to board the front of the bus, should alert their driver.”

Marshalltown’s transit will continue to provide rides to the city’s residents.

“Our staff cleans and disinfects all buses multiple times per day,” he said. “To protect the health and safety of our employees and passengers, please only ride when absolutely necessary to get to work or to other essential destinations like the grocery store and pharmacy.”

All of the transit’s fixed routes will continue to run on schedule, but changes are possible in the future because of the ever expanding restriction from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These decisions will be made by evaluating ridership data, considering the availability of our workforce and with guidance from state and local public health and government officials,” Pigors said.

The pandemic has also caused the city’s planning and zoning and board of adjustment April meetings to be postponed until May.

The move is to give the public an option to participate. The public hearing will happen at a later date when social distancing is no longer required to stop the spread of COVID-19.
